Effective sanitation of any kind requires stormwater drainage. Pit latrines, septic tanks and sewers can transmit disease when flooded, as their contents mix with runoff and overflow into the streets and homes of the community. In recognition of these and other problems with urban flooding, the Engineering Division of the British Overseas Development Administration (ODA) funded a 2-year project entitled 'Performance-based Evaluation of Surface Water Drainage in Developing Countries'. This chapter summarizes some of the most salient findings from this research in the city of Indore in India. |
