The Colombian ASAS System. |

|
ASAS is the acronym for Alcantarillado Sin Arrastre de Solidos, Spanish for solids-free sewerage. The system consists of compact septic tanks and sewers. It was developed in 1981 by the author as a low-cost solution for a large area of the Colombian city of Cartagena and a neighbouring town, where severe physical and socio-economic conditions prevailed. The system's development was part of a rehabilitation programme undertaken by the Colombian government with the financial aid of the World Bank. |

The ASAS system turned out to be an efficient, reliable and low-cost system with a long useful life, appropriate for the sanitation of urban areas with equal or less severe conditions than those encountered during the Cartagena project. In view of this, we developed general design criteria to enable the system to be used in any location, especially where conventional sewerage is prohibitively expensive. |
