Simplified
sewerage was first installed in the early 1980s in Rocas and Santos
Reis, adjacent low-income areas in Natal, the capital of
the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil (Fig. 1).
The very first installation was in Quadra 90 ('Housing Block 90') (Fig.
2).
