Given hydrological uncertainties, this cannot be done on an experimental basis; no two storms are identical, and experimental control over the level of solids in a real drainage system is limited. A computer model of the drainage system could, however, allow the user to do 'hypothetical experiments' or sensitivity analyses of performance with varying levels of solids.
Research Questions
In summary, the research questions addressed in this chapter are:
Can the performance of a conventional open storm drainage system in Indore be defined and modelled?
Can the level and size of solids in this system be usefully characterized?
Can sensitivity analyses with the model show how performance varies with the level of solids?
What are the implications for practice of the results from the above?

Model Construction, Calibration and Verification

The Site.
Indore
Indore is a city of 1.2 million people located 125 km southwest of Bhopal in the large central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The city was chosen as the study site for several reasons. Both the ODA and the Indore Development Authority expressed initial interest in the work and provided substantial support throughout. The ODA-funded Slum Improvement Programme there applied innovative drainage designs, and it was hoped that the research could compare these sites with conventional practice.
