We were also unable to find any information on the characteristics of sewage produced by populations in the socio-economic strata corresponding to those of the Southeast Zone and Pasacaballos. It was not practicable to investigate directly the sewage characteristics in Cartagena, because those areas with the appropriate conditions did not have sewerage. However, records of general characteristics of Cartagena sewage were available. |

With no means to define parameters for a realistic design, we decided to devise a set of preliminary parameters based on theoretical assumptions. A more elaborate design was presented in September 1982. For that report the acronym ASAS was then adopted for the system. Initially, the name ASAS was applied only to the sewers. Subsequently, when the detailed hydraulics and functions of the septic tanks and sewers were better understood, it was decided that the name should refer to the whole system. |

ASAS Pilot Projects |

Two small pilot schemes were constructed in December 1981, one for six households in the neighbourhood of Fredonia of the Southeast Zone and the other for four households in Pasacaballos. Both included cylindrical and rectangular septic tanks and were put into operation in early January 1982. |

Because the houses had no sanitary installations, compact cabins were built with internal pour-flush toilets and showers, and low-cost sinks and laundry troughs on the outside. The precise layout of the units varied according the preference of the householder. In one of the houses, for example, a bathroom was being built with a cistern-flush toilet and a shower compartment; these were therefore incorporated into the project. In all the houses, the drains from the sinks and pour-flush toilets were connected upstream of the septic tank. The showers and the wash troughs were connected downstream of the septic tank, except in one case where both discharged into the septic tank. |
