I suspect that like many, I first heard Laura Cantrell<\/a> on John Peels<\/a> show. He had a soft spot for her and plugged her \u2018Not the trembling kind\u2019<\/a> LP relentlessly (\u201cIt\u2019s sweet 16 this year\u201d). She also has a new LP out of BBC sessions from around that time. Pure country music \u2013 no frills, just from the heart. I thought she\u2019d be good\u2026\u2026.but I didn\u2019t think she\u2019d be THAT<\/em><\/strong> good!<\/p>\n

Met up with Gary and Steve (who saw Laura last time she played Leeds at the Wardrobe) and Mark and Kev who I hadn\u2019t seen for far too long. First up was Georgie Breakfast (\u201cGeordie Breakfast?\u2026.isn\u2019t that a Greggs pasty and a bottle of Newcy Brown?\u201d) who\u2019s English, but moved to the USA where he met Laura and has since returned, to write songs about the rain \u2013 he has a mellow finger picking style.<\/p>\n

How to describe Laura Cantrell\u2019s voice? \u2018Perfect\u2019 is word that springs to mind. Effortless and beautiful. Pure and straight to the heart. Her band were all wonderful players and sang great harmonies too, but guitarist Mark Spencer was something else\u2026..how does he do that!? He also got to play the Brudenells battered old piano which they\u2019d somehow got on stage. Stories of postcards from John Peel, seeing Merle Haggard live (and this one about his wife)<\/a>, Gig disasters with only 10 people, 2 of them a drunken couple kept the evening running along just fine.<\/p>\n

The encore was a version of New Order\u2019s \u2018Love Vigilantes\u2019. Then someone asked for \u2018Whiskey makes you sweeter<\/a>\u2019 \u201cAh, you\u2019re still thirsty for the old stuff. We\u2019ve not been doing that one on this tour but\u2026\u201d and she did a wonderful job at getting all the crowd to join in. \u201cWhat a great room, and it\u2019s only a Tuesday night!\u201d. Ms Cantrell could light up any room on any night \u2013 you really, really<\/em><\/strong> should go and see her!<\/p>\n
