All this talking is only bravado..

The 1980s were to music what George bush is to middle eastern foreign policy, and I dont mean shock and awe I am talking in many cases a unmitigated disaster .There have been very few times when I have heard a song on the radio and stopped what I was doing to just sit and listen, I can even remember what I was doing at the time, some remember what they were doing when they heard Kennedy , Elvis and Curtis had died with me it was the first time I heard ‘Tinsel Town In the Rain’ by the Blue Nile.

Paul Buchanans lyric is so simple and yet so stunningly brilliant. To me it was like nothing I had heard before, little did I know then that 20 years later there would have only been 4 studio albums, Walk across the roof tops (1983), Hats (1989), Peace at last (1996) and High (2005), each of them, as you would expect due to the time period between them are completely individual. Buchanans voice and the attention to detail in the production of the albums are a common thread coupled with the ordinary subjects of the songs.

When listening to a Blue Nile album you get the feeling Paul Buchanan records and puts them out just to satisfy his natural instincts to communicate his feelings through song rather than any record labels need to shift units. The first album ‘Walk across the rooftops’ had big critical acclaim and has some famous fans in music, the album consists of just seven songs and the three stands out songs on the album in my humble opinion are TITR, Easter parade and heat wave.

The second Blue Nile album ‘Hats’ is there most synthesizer based album of the quartet. And again there treatment of the simple and the ordinary subjects is the beauty of the album, the opening track over the hillside, is about a man who no matter how hard he works the bills and life itself are a struggle but it will not always be this way is the singers refrain, the blue Nile treat all love affairs in the same way its the little things in a relationship that are the big things, the soulful Lets go out tonight this is truly one of Paul Buchanans finest vocal performances so much so the Great Isaac Hayes covered the song (if you have a copy please can I have one).

The third album Peace at last has been described as the blue Nile most acoustic album from the opening track its clear it is quite different from the other two previous albums, this first track featured in a TV commercial and I am offering a big 3 points pop pickers if you can tell me what it advertised. Highlights from the album are Tomorrow Morning, sentimental man and family life.

The fourth and most recent album, High is arguably Paul Buchanans best work it draws heavy from his life experiences, there is more of feeling of alienation about the album a dip into some sad and tormented lives and in true blue Nile style they have hook line from a sign outside a church please do not throw confetti

Waiting to see the blue Nile live is like waiting for hayleys comet to pass, I was lucky enough in 2006 to catch them in Manchester, it was two hours of perfection, I had to take along a reluctant guest and after the gig they were converts its really easy to do when you can buy the entire back catalogue for about twenty quid.

Whats the purpose of QUIMS if not to recommend our favourite tracks from an artist for fellow members to try out, you might decide what a complete load of toss that was and then again if you are introduced to just one new song then its all been worth while

Alice cooper was my gran

2006 saw the 30th anniversary gig of The Fall in Manchester..I say their but we all know its Mark E Smith and which ever mercenaries are willing to sacrifice their rights to guitar solos and individual flare (apart from the odd beard) in order to deliver his Neolithic soundscapes. The latest incarnation of the Mighty Fall were picked up in Austin when his band walked out on him.

The Century Hall in Manchester was packed with an appreciative crowd of everyone from sprightly new indie kids to the battle worn warrior horses (even a old guy on crutches at the back!).

After a rejuvenated John Cooper Clarke gave us Beasley Boulevard and an excruciating video jockey tortured us with his ability to make a techno noised out of any old bit of VHS on came the Fall (circa June 2006). There arent many 50 year olds Id go out of my way to see but this was something else. As my cousin dig commented: He sings so much better since he lost all his teeth!. The energy, the bloodymindedness.did Mark E Smith make any concessions or any mention that this was a special evening? Did he eck, and lets face it, it wouldve been a let down if he did! Cant wait to see them again.

You think its the pints when it turns on the lights: A personal history of The Fall

March 2007 sees the 50th birthday of a national treasure Mark E Smith. He’s produced some of the most exciting LPs committed to vinyl, never rested on his laurels and never shied away from speaking his mind. My personal favourite quote of his was after Boy George had been exposed as a Heroin addict: there was hysteria in the British press about the example he was setting to his fans. When asked about it Mark said “Well I’m a big Elvis fan but I dont eat 20 hamburgers a day!”.

I went to St Peters Grammar school in Prestwich (2 bus journeys from Little Hulton mustve been mad!) where The Fall were from. The story goes that virtually everyone in Prestwich has been in the Fall at one time or another. I heard them first (of course) on John Peel in 1978 – How I Wrote Elastic Man which I went out and bought that very weekend. City Hobgoblins the B-side is still in my fave Fall track.

Some of the Falls stuff was truly frightening. I bought Totales Turn expecting a brace of Elastic Man type tunes..and what did I get?!! Songs recorded on a crappy tape recorder with angry neighbours banging at the door.live songs in front of a less than appreciative working mens club..totally wired!

I went to see them at an all day event at the old Manchester Poly (1/11/80) that was hosted by Peelie and also had Orange Juice on the bill. I was only 16 and being in what was supposed to be an 18s and over venue was quite intimidating. That same night, Jeff, Terry and I went to see the Jam at the Apollo on their Sound Effects tour What a day!.

I later met Karl Burns dad (see peel page) who mentioned what a character Mark E Smith was “Apparently, he’s married an American girl hes only just met”. Saw them at the Hacienda a couple of times (Oct 84 and Oct 85) and at the Festival of the 10th summer at GMEX before moving to London

I remember going mental to Australians in Europe (a tune that still gets me out of my seat and ready to go) with Digger at the front of an Astoria gig in 87 we were those nutters you always try to avoid in the mosh pit or stick out a stay elbow hoping to catch one in the ribs.

We went to see the Curious Orange show at Sadlers Wells in Sept ’88 where the band were in the background whilst the Micheal Clark Company dance group danced around in front of them. Bizzare but it worked. The 1989 Futurama 6 in Bradford had a pretty impressive line up the curry we went for afterwards was impressive too.

By now, I had a dozen or so of their LPs (does Slates slags etc. count as an LP?). 12 LPs and I still had no idea what he was on about Fantastic!

They covered the Kinks Victoria on Frenz Experiment, and it just didnt feel right to me. I remember Mark slagging off The Stranglers for covering All day and all of the night “Y’see with Victoria we deconstructed it and rebuilt it” hmmmmmmmm the faint whiff of bullshit creeping in.

I kind of lost touch with them after that. Saw them play at Cities in the Park in 91 but nothing that made me want to buy another LP. I heard the odd track on the odd Peel session over the years but it was the release of Touch Sensitive that made me sit up and listen again a work of genius! I went to see them at the Irish centre in Leeds on the strength of that track and they were truly awe-inspiring. I came out wanting to be in a band I was nearly 40 and all I could think of was that I wanted to do that! How often does that happen..

2006 30th Anniversary Gig, 2007 Mark Es 50th Birthday and youd forgive him for playing crowd pleasers and raiding his back catalogue but with LPs as strong as Fall Heads Roll and Reformation Post TLC why bother.

When Bob Dylan was asked “What are your records about?” at a press conference he replied “Some are about 3 minutes and some are about 4”. Inspired by this our challenge was to find 5 tracks that were 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3, 4 and 5 minutes long.

Most struggled for 1 minute tracks (except for Bob: The Residents Commercial LP has 40 tracks all 1 min long) but there was an embarrassment of riches for 3 minutes, so many so that often the choice was put to the vote Well I can play this or this and a few extras were fitted in
