KabKarma

It’s been a wee while since Si Webster put on a Kabaret Karma so it was great to see a big turn out for this charity event which featured a beautiful duo, a belly dancer, a street dance class and those good old Wild West (Yorkshire) boys the ‘Wine Stoned Cowboys’…..full report to follow…..

QUIMSLanguage

This meeting was at Dr P’s and featured all 6 quimmers for the first time in ages. A first for QUIMS tonight with all our choices played via ‘Napster’ on his magic Sonos system controlled by an iPad……technology gone mad! There were only a couple of choices that couldn’t be found which when you consider the topic, was impressive. Most of us went for foreign music choices but Jez took the topic to mean crazy religious stuff whilst Si threw in some literary stuff.

Inspired by Si Norths visit last time, Bob constructed a ‘Who’s this?’ picture round from music mag covers…….answers will be on the facebook page…… An amazing Fromage board almost stole the night…….Epoisses (Sainbury’s finest) is just the best….

This was a fund raising event for Cloth Cat who do lots of music based stuff in and around Leeds for those who need it most. Tonight was a great mix of solo ‘singer song writers’ and up beat bands of really high quality. The evening was arranged by Rory who played out the evening with a Hudy Gurdy mash up that rocked the place. Great pub, great evening, great cause……full report to follow….

JCC

For Marisa’s 17th birthday we went to see her (and our) favourite poet John Cooper Clarke. We met Si and Bel, who had got us 2nd row seats, for a pint in the Victoria first and bumped into Di, a neighbour from across the street…… Britains premier poet came to Leeds at the head of all star show that thouroughly entertained a packed Town Hall. Magazine‘s Dave Formula lead a soul covers band and Salfords Ren Harvieu played first, but tonight was really about the spoken word.

Luke Wright was very funny with poems about his kid in reins and a posh blokes in the Off licence.  His Essex Lion was a hoot. Mike Garry‘s performance started much darker but brightened beautifully with an A-Z Manchester poem about Tony Wilson (‘St Anthony’ – which gave a couple of mentions to De La Salle) and ended with a lovely one about what his mother taught him. We got Marisa both their books and look forward to discovering more…..

Dr Johnny Clarke was on sparkling form with hilarious banter between poems new (bipolar inmates & product endorsments) and old (Hire car & Twat). There were jokes that chimed wiith the mainly grey-top audience “I don’t buy green bananas anymore!”. He strayed into the surreal when talking about how to make a butler chimpanzee look more aloof but still kept the crowd in stitches. He finished with his own personal favourite ‘Evidently Chicken Town’ (“Banned by the BBC after the person in charge of the bleeper sued for repetative strain injury”) and then was sent back on by ex-Clash manager Johnny Green to do ‘I wanna be yours’ as a thank you to fellow Yorkies The Arctic Monkeys who covered it on their last LP.

A top bloke – a top top night!

TRAAMS1

Three three-piece bands for free! This was a spontaneous night out thanks to free tickets via the Brudenell Facebook page (Thanks Nathan!). When I saw ‘Like this for the chance of winning Traams tickets’ I thought…..Bernard Butler…..why not…..(presses ‘like’)…..except he’s playing with Trans not Traams……anyhow…..tickets were won and as Sledge loves Cowtown and I enjoyed Alaska when they supported Public Service Broadcasting, we went along – and I’m bloody glad we did!

Cowtown

I too am now a Cowtown convert. Revved up pop songs that remind you of Devo (or was it just subliminal messages from the T-shirt). Great fun with superb guitar playing, superb drumming and mega superb bass lines c/o what looks like a mini-moog. Their Dudes Vs Bad Dudes LP is worth some of your earth pounds……one to watch!

Alaska

A hard act to follow but Alaska tried and breezed through their set, aided and abbetted by their parents, happily dancing and fixing the drum set when needed.

TRAAMS2

Traams were just fantastic. Indie drums and bass to die for with an intensity of guitar playing you don’t often see. Reminded me of what Tony Wilson said about Joy Division “They weren’t on stage because they wanted to be there, but because they had to be”. There were a couple of longer jams that had me totally entranced – The dancing bass player (a cross between JJ Burnell and Andy McCluskey) sparring with the guitarist leaning in – I would have been quite happy for them to go on all night.
