MenaceBeach

5 bands for £2.00……hard to believe but true…..and the 3 we saw were excellent!

Colours

Colour of Spring were playing as we entered – the lead singer had a NEU! T-shirt on so he was in my good books already. Edgy pop with a touch of ‘Slowdive’ about them – a really good set…..but terrible footwear….

Sieze

Seize the Chair on the other hand wore Docs and New Balance and absolutely blew me away with there full on triumphant sound. They steam rollered through a wonderful set that I’d pay good money to see again. At times they were like a beefed up NEU! and the bobble hat reminded me of Devo……

MenaceBeach2

Tonight was the album launch of ‘Ratworld’ by Leeds own Menace Beach. A funny mix of Seattle stlye noise mixed in with C86 sensibility. Seize the chairs guitarist was playing with them and we found out he was called ‘Nick’ and that it was his birthday tomorrow and they dedicated a number to his mum Pat. They all had docs on from what I could see – always a winner in my book….look forward to seeing them all again

QuimsLogo

Hadn’t realised that QUIMS was 10 years old this week until Jez pointed it out. The iPod classic in the logo is no longer available and whilst one quimmer has abandoned physical forms of music all together, another buys vinyl almost exclusively……but not much else has changed….

Here’s to the next decade of quimming!

Icebreaker

As my first gig of the year was a minimalist Orchestral affair I thought I’d do the same with the review.

In attendance: Bob, Jez, John + Sally (sat at the back)

Who?: Icebreaker who do this

First half: Terry Rileys ‘In C’ – AWESOME!

Second half: Mostly obscure old Kraftwerk with an orchestral twist

Upside: Great sound (especially once the drums kicked in). Autobahn was fab. Great visuals that matched the sound.

Downside: They had pan pipes but didn’t do Ruckzak

An old school friend Paul contacted me via this site earlier this year. After a 30 year gap, we met up and still got on. He’s a big Ian McNabb fan and vowed to get me to one of his gigs……so as a final birthday treat (I’ve managed to spin this 50th lark out for over a month now) he got us tickets to see him at the New Roscoe. It wasn’t terribly well attended but those there were treated to a master class of songwriting…..well, he has been doing it steadily for those 30 years.

“You’re going to get the ‘play-as-many-songs-as-I-can’ show tonight as apposed to the ‘Drunken ramblings’ show” – Paul’s misses refuses to go and see him again after catching him at one of the latter shows, but tonight he’s on bottled water and in great voice. Beautiful lyrics, rolling guitar riffs, Neil Young-esk mouth organ playing – what’s not to like. A lot of his tunes tell of his passion for music Fire inside my soul or his politics No Hero to Me or just hope for the future You must be prepared to dream and there was even the odd ‘mega hit’ in there Love is a wonderful colour

IanMc

His best ad libs were during Liverpool girl where he alluded to the 3-0 defeat Liverpool had at Old Trafford today….. There’s more than a touch of Neil Young to his guitar style and his lyrics (though not his voice). It’s no wonder he fitted so well with Youngs band ‘Crazy Horse’.

A great evening – I’ve now vowed to get Paul out to a gig by someone he’s never seen before
