Moon1

A fun night with Moonlandingz – the UK’s best imaginary band who played an entertaining, if rather short set

Moon2

First up were Hank Haint and the Cruickshanks, last seen supporting the wonderful Meatbodies. There were a few technical hitches tonight but thankfully, Moonlandingz drummer stepped in and saved the day by re-routing them through the main bands amp. Rock solid riffs all the way – Great stuff!

Now if you were putting together an imaginary band….who would you have in it………..? Frank Zappa, E from the Eels……

frank-zappa-7eels

…2 drummers, one from the Stranglers and one from Status Quo (but let one of them play keyboards)…..

stranglersStatus

….Nick Drake…no, Nick Drakes sister Gabrielle and the guy from the 118 adverts….

What a beautiful noise they’d make……

Tonights imaginary band were first mentioned in a ‘Eccentronic Research Council’ song who feature the coolest woman in showbiz – Maxine Peake. Read about them here. I first heard them earlier this week on Marc Rileys 6Music show (where else) and thought ‘I’ve got to see these!’ 60’s acid tinged synth + guitar with driving drums and bass – reminded me of another moon – Moon Duo. I just wish they had played a longer set as what they did play, was awesome. Lias Saoudi is a fantastic front man – Fat White Family are now firmly on the ‘must see’ list….

It was all over by 10.15 so Sledge and I were in Wharfe Chambers by 10.30 for a quiet end to a lovely evening. If you’re going to see them, my advice would be………don’t be late!

Creep

A great night out at the Brudenell with Sledge, John and Steve in the company of 3 punky bands, sporting many tattoos, who knew how to rip it up.

Creep5

First up were The Franceens from York who stole the show for me. A great set of high energy guitar backed with melodic bass and thumping drums. The lead guitarist/singer Dan, leaped off stage at one point and kissed the guy in front of me…..before getting back on stage to announce it was his (cooler) brother and it was his birthday…..then jumped down again to hug him and play in front of him one more time, before giving his guitar away and walking off to the back of the venue! They were worth the entrance fee alone. Looking forward to playing their N/A EP (recorded live at the Woolpack pub).

Creep6

Next up were ‘In Evil Hour‘ – great punk sound with a charismatic lead singer Al, who was obviously enjoying herself. there was one guy determined to dance at the front and we all gave him a wide berth in which to do it. Some great bass playing.

Creep3

Headliners ‘The Creepshow‘ are from Canada and were like a slicker version of their fellow countrymen ‘The Brains‘. They were having fun and got the crowd going in a North American style “Let’s see those hands…” Lead singer Kenda “Twisted” Legaspi came into the crowd on a couple of occasions getting the crowd involved.

Creep2

Someone in the crowd shouted that the keyboard player (Kristian “The Reverend” Rowles) looked like Boy George, after which he kept trying to work out the chords for ‘Karma Chameleon’ on the keys. For the encore, he and  Kenda were supposed to do a sensitive version of Crazy but it ended up as a mash-up with Karma Chameleon – very funny. What a great Thursday night!

Chronixx2

If like me, your reggae heart lives in the 70’s, then Chronixx is for you. At only 22 he’s already become the biggest act in Jamaica with his ‘Reggae Revival’ style. Ian is a Jamaican music guru and introduced me to him last year. On his recent holiday there he noted that along with Bob Marley, he was played everywhere you went. So when we heard he was coming to Leeds we got our tickets straight away.

Chronixx

Gigs at the O2 usually start and finish early – I remember John and Roger missing most of an Elbow gig there because they’d been for a drink and didn’t get there til after 9 – but not tonight…..when it got to 11pm and the DJ’s were still spinning old classics and giving it “LEEDS! Lets see your hands!” Ian shrugged and said “Soon Come” – there’s no rush! After a few warm up acts, Chronixx came on to rapturous applause.

chron

A great set ensued that went on til 1am and kept us dancing, waving our arms and singing along. My favourite is ‘Here Comes Trouble’ – just a perfect reggae tune. He’s now recording with the Marley brothers, there should be plenty more on the way.

Wobble1

Jah Wobble has been at the centre of a lot of the music I have loved, for a long time. I remember buying Metal Box (in a Metal Box) along with ‘London Calling’ Xmas 79 with money my Grandad gave me. My crappy stereo at the time couldn’t cope with Wobbles gigantic basslines until a couple of 2p’s were blu-tacked to the end of the arm – gouging even deeper cuts into the vinyl. It felt like music from another planet…..and tonight, he started with a Drum and Bass version of ‘Socialist’, which set the standard for the night.

Wobble4

During the 2 hour set he played jazz covers of film tunes (being a geezer I guess he had to do ‘The Sweeney’ – and to hear the bass of ‘Get Carter’ get wobble-ised was a treat), old Ska standards (This clip gives captures the atmosphere but not the bass pummeling your chest) Invaders of the Heart beauties (‘Visions of You’ ‘Becoming More Like God’) and PiL tunes (‘Public Image’ ‘Poptones’).

Wobble5

I can’t tell you how much I loved this show – He was funny with his intro’s, played great percussion and was obviously having fun. He was the band leader getting the most out of very talented musicians who could play anything he threw at them, getting them to shine….but the bass was the star of the show.

Wobble2

If you get the chance, go and see him – you won’t be disappointed
