We convened at Jez’s place as Mrs Jez was away with the twins. Jez chose the topic and opened it up by allowing the originals of well-known covers to be played as well. Roger was unable to attend hed just got a new job, re-organising the work force of a major insurance company (“Everyone scowls at him as he enters the office”). A week later, floods hit Britain and an estimated 2.5 Billion pounds of insurance claims come in……he’s been a bit busy..
Breaking with the convention of a track each in turn, we were invited to play a half hour set. This allowed for the quick ditching of tracks that werent going down too well (“Song sung blue” in my case) and the ability to slip in ones you’d forgotten about that came up in the course of the conversation (Half man half biscuits ‘Song to the siren’ for example…”The singer out of Slipknot went to Rome to see the Pope…”).
I was really chuft that Simon brought along The Killers version of ‘Ruby dont take your love to town’ that I’d spotted it at his place during our 1st ever meeting and had been wanting to hear it since. My own personnel favourite however was a version of ‘Some candy talking’ by Richard Hawley. I’d never realised how good the lyrics were before and those lush strings – just wonderful!
We all had enough in reserve for at least another meeting on this topic, probably two or three.
