I really enjoyed Wooden Shjips when they played the Brudenell 18 months ago, so when Erik “Ripley” Johnson brought his other band Moon Duo to town, I wasn’t going to miss out. It was hosted by the Brudenell but in a venue just down the road which was new to me. Left Bank was an Anglican Church and now is an arts centre. The brick exterior fits in well with the back-to-back houses on each side and doesn’t prepare you for the gothic interior.
First up was ‘Elizabeth’ who was a bloke doing East India Youth type sonic landscape (without the dance beats) on various bits of kit which sounded, quite fittingly, ethereal
There were 3 in Moon Duo tonight with drummer John Jeffrey joining Ripley and Sanae Yamada to great effect. They did a wonderful set of dance/trance inducing rock out wigs with psychedelic lights that looked amazing – a lot of the light effects seemed to be pulsing from the sacred heart of Jesus who was in the stain glass window behind. I’m sure that wasn’t a coincidence…….The perfect setting for an inspirational night….”Thanks for coming to church with us” – the pleasure was all mine!
Some better photos of the night here
The moon was out and we had Duo pints……..
