Cherry Ghost + The Rails (+ Mush + Happyness) @ The Brudenell Social Club, Leeds 21/6/14

My oldest friend Jeff (we started primary school together) came into town to see ‘Cherry Ghost’ with his pal Max, so Martin and I joined them. Jeff’s a big fan and is going to see them later in the week at Manchester Cathedral. Martin knows Cherry Ghosts ex-keyboard player ‘Ben’ who makes a living out of jingles and theme tunes now. There was a free gig in the games room on at the same time. I heard ‘Mush’ soundcheck whilst waiting for the others to arrive and thought they sounded wonderful – Martin and I sneaked out to see their set, more of which later…..Max has promised to write up the Cherry Ghost bit…..

First up were ‘The Rails‘ who were a folky, country tinged, close harmony duo with a new Edwyn Collins produced LP ‘Fair Warning’ out on Island Records to their name. Great guitar play between them and a great pair of heels (on Kami, not James).

Mush

About 5 songs into Cherry Ghost, Martin and I popped out to watch ‘Mush‘ and were very glad we did. Fantastic sound with drums and bass lines to die for…..we stayed for the whole set. Did one of them used to work the bar at the Brudenell…..shurely not, they look far too young. Wearing their Velvet Underground hearts on their sleeves (well, T-Shirt anyway) these are one to watch!

Back to Cherry Ghost and then after their set, back to the games room for ‘Happyness‘ (no photo I’m afraid – sorry). Another really accomplished outfit that I’d never have come across but for the Wonder that is, the Brudenell Social Club. tight band, great players – great night!
